I began my journey in this incredible industry, long before it was considered cool…1981 to be exact.
I took a year off as all my friends were headed to college, that fall after graduation, because I hadn’t a clue
as to how I wanted to shape my life. No clue. What I knew for sure was that working at the local grocery store, with my creative nature,
was not cuttin’ it for me. I had already fallen in love with cutting friend’s & family’s hair (just had a knack for it) when
I discovered that schooling and licensing was required. So the following fall I applied for a student loan ($1600!) and enrolled
in a school near me.
Not gonna sugar coat this, these were discouraging times for me. I felt embarrassed…a “Beauty School”? I knew of NO one (at that time)
that was entering the field of Cosmetology. Women like “Madge the Manicurist” in a Palmolive dish washing liquid ad and “Opal Gardner”, the kooky blonde
hairdresser on All My Children were seemingly a couple of the only ones I knew! This was a ‘badge’ I took on as I felt others would think less of me not having sought out a ‘real’ education. Turns out I couldn’t have been more wrong. Enter the likes of Vidal Sassoon, Jose Eber and Horst Rechelbacher! My shame soon left me as I began to believe in myself and my career selection! I canNOT think of a more suited one! Women are now making their mark in this industry long since shaped by our male counterparts! Move over gentlemen!
So incredible to think that that was nearly 37 years ago!
Over the course of those years, I was trusted to manage various departments of highly respected organizations, such as The Barbers and Rocco Altobelli, as well as becoming a Platform Educator for both. About half way into my career, I decided to take a break from being behind the chair and actually taught cosmetology at a local school. What I discovered was that shaping future cosmetologists was a way to add another layer to my profession. However, it didn’t take me long to realize that I missed working behind the chair directly with clients so I returned to the salon and have remained there (at various locations) to this day.
While my completion of cosmetology training dates back to the early 80’s (that’s right, big hair, shoulder pads and skinny ties were the rage!), don’t let that fool you…I continually sharpen more than just my shears! Honing the skills and techniques that are required to stay on top of this industry’s ever-changing trends today, is something I feed on! Classes, Seminars, Trade Shows, Books, Magazines, Videos…all of it!
